Jatropha multifida

One of our favorites xeriscape perennials!  This beautiful plants give gorgeous color all summer long, no matter what the temperature is.  An unright grower, it reaches about 3 feet tall during the summer, but not very wide.  If you plant more than one, it becomes much fuller.  Glossy green leaves have an unusual shape.  Brilliant red flowers in small clusters appear at the top of each stem. I would guess, that the more you pruned this plant when it was young, the more stems it would have, which would result in more blooms later.  These blooms last all summer until the first hard frost knocks it down.  It has been reliably root hardy in San Antonio.  While it will survive extended droughts without watering, it looks best with weekly watering.
