Erythrina herbacea - Coral Bean
Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at 12:01PM One of our favorite plants! Outstanding, stunning color when it is in bloom. Can grow to 10 feet tall in either a tree shape or bush shape, depending on the pruning. Absolutely smothered in brilliant red blooms in late spring, early summer. Fairly drought tolerant and fair cold tolerance. Ours in the garden center on Bandera Rd graced us with beautiful color for many years until the winter of 09-10, when a rare 3 continuous days at or below freezing damaged it. The trunk resprouted, and grew quickly. The following year it bloomed normally. Belongs in every yard in San Antonio and Central/South Texas!
